What Is the Bug Barometer?

Twice a year, NPMA’s board-certified entomologists review recent weather history, long-term weather and drought forecasts, and pest biology to develop the Bug Barometer.

It isn’t a day-by-day weather prediction or a promise that every home will experience the same pest activity. It is a regional outlook that helps homeowners and pest professionals understand how expected weather conditions may affect pests in the months ahead.

As an NPMA member, Anti-Pest pays close attention to forecasts like this one. We combine that national outlook with what our technicians see every day in Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding communities.

What the Forecast Says About Our Region

NPMA highlights three pests for the South Central region this fall:

• Ants: Warm conditions can give ants more time to forage outdoors. Rain and changing moisture levels can also affect where some colonies are active, making ant trails more noticeable around patios, foundations, kitchens, and bathrooms. Learn more in our Northwest Louisiana ant control guide.

• Cockroaches: Different kinds of cockroaches behave differently. Larger outdoor species, such as American cockroaches, can remain active in warm, damp areas and occasionally enter garages, bathrooms, and other sheltered spaces. German cockroaches, which live and reproduce indoors, are a year-round concern regardless of outdoor weather.

• Mosquitoes: Temperature, rainfall, and available water all affect mosquito activity. Rain-filled gutters, plant saucers, toys, tarps, and low spots can provide places for mosquitoes to develop when temperatures are suitable.

When the forecast says these pests may remain active “later than usual,” it doesn’t mean they normally disappear in fall. It means outdoor activity may stay higher for longer before cooler conditions change pest behavior.

These Aren’t the Only Pests You May See

The Bug Barometer calls attention to pests that may be especially affected by the predicted weather pattern. It is not a complete list of everything Northwest Louisiana homeowners could encounter this fall.

Mice, Norway rats, and roof rats can enter homes at any time of year. Cooler weather may encourage shelter-seeking, but rodent problems are not limited to fall or winter. Homeowners may also encounter spiders, crickets, ground beetles, fire ants, centipedes, millipedes, and other pests already found around local properties.

These pests do not all respond to weather in the same way. Activity can also vary from one property to another based on standing water, landscaping, moisture, food sources, and openings around the home.

The forecast gives us a useful regional heads-up—not a complete pest checklist for every house.

Why Year-Round Pest Control Makes Sense

The Bug Barometer is a good reminder that pest problems in Northwest Louisiana don’t always stick to the calendar. Waiting for cold weather isn’t a reliable pest-control plan, especially when many pests can remain active indoors or around homes throughout the year.
